Staying Motivated in Your Guitar Journey: A Beginner's Guide

Writer's picture: Ivan CardozoIvan Cardozo

Are you just starting your guitar adventure in Boston? As a guitar instructor with years of experience teaching beginners, I've noticed that maintaining motivation is crucial for progress. Let's explore some essential tips to keep you inspired and progressing steadily.

Finding Your Musical Direction

The first step to staying motivated is knowing exactly what style of music speaks to you. Whether it's the blues of B.B. King, the classical compositions of Julian Bream, or the rock riffs of Jimmy Page, your practice should revolve around your preferred genre. This focused approach makes practice sessions more enjoyable and relevant to your goals.

Understanding Technique Requirements

Each musical style demands specific techniques. Blues players need to master string bending and vibrato, whilst classical guitarists focus on fingerpicking patterns. Understanding these requirements helps structure your practice effectively:

  • Rock: Focus on power chords, palm muting, and pick control

  • Classical: Develop fingerpicking patterns and nail technique

  • Folk: Learn fingerpicking patterns and strumming variations

  • Jazz: Study complex chord voicings and scale patterns

Plectrum vs Fingers: Choosing Your Approach

The choice between using a plectrum (pick) or your fingers significantly impacts your sound and playing style. While rock and metal typically favour picks for precise, powerful attacks, classical and fingerstyle genres rely on fingerpicking techniques. I recommend experimenting with both approaches early in your journey to find what suits your style best.

The Importance of Quality Instruments

A common mistake beginners make is starting with a poor-quality instrument. An inadequate guitar can severely hamper your progress and motivation. Fortunately, modern manufacturing means quality doesn't always equal expensive.

Take Yamaha, for instance. Their entry-level guitars, like the FG800 acoustic or Pacifica 112V electric, offer excellent playability and sound at reasonable prices. These instruments provide:

  • Reliable tuning stability

  • Comfortable neck profiles

  • Good intonation

  • Decent sound quality

Advanced Techniques: Hammer-ons and Pull-offs

Let's conclude with some practical technique work. Hammer-ons and pull-offs are essential for creating fluid lead lines and can be practiced on both electric and acoustic guitars.

Electric Guitar

On an electric guitar, these techniques require less finger strength due to lower action (string height) and lighter strings. Start with simple exercises:

  1. Fret the 5th fret on the high E string (Use left hand fingers 1 for the 5th fret A and finger 3 for the 7th fret B)

  2. Hammer-on to the 7th fret without picking again

  3. Pull-off back to the 5th fret

  4. Repeat slowly, focusing on clear note articulation

Acoustic Guitar

The same techniques on acoustic require more finger strength and precision. The higher action means you'll need to:

  1. Apply more pressure for hammer-ons

  2. Use more controlled movement for pull-offs

  3. Practice at slower tempos initially

The Impact of Guitar Setup

A proper guitar setup significantly affects your ability to perform these techniques. Poor setup can result in:

  • High action making hammer-ons harder to execute

  • Uneven frets causing buzzing during pull-offs

  • Improper neck relief making certain frets unplayable

Consider having your instrument professionally set up to optimise its playability and make these techniques easier to master.
